The Simien Mountains are home to several endemic and endangered species:
Gelada baboon – a grass-eating monkey found only in the Ethiopian Highlands
Walia ibex – a rare wild goat found only in the Simien Mountains
Ethiopian wolf – one of the world’s rarest canids
Lammergeier (Bearded vulture) – a striking bird of prey that feeds on bone marrow
The Simien Mountains are one of Africa’s best trekking destinations, with routes ranging from short hikes to multi-day treks. Popular spots include:
Ras Dashen – for experienced hikers
Chennek Camp – a key spot for wildlife sightings
Geech & Imet Gogo – known for stunning panoramic views
Most treks require guides and local scouts, and park fees are regulated by the Simien Mountains National Park authority.
Dry season: October to March – best time for trekking
Rainy season: June to September – lush landscapes but difficult trails
